Clockwork Angel is the first book in the Infernal Devices series, written by the author, Cassandra Clare. In her novel, Clare intersects the lives of Theresa Gray; “a mundane” as she is referred to in the beginning of the book, and the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. The story takes place in England during the reign of Queen Victoria, and it begins when 16-year-old Tessa Gray travels from New York to England looking for her brother, Nathaniel Gray. As she arrives in England, Tessa is kidnapped by the Dark Sides, members of a mysterious Downworld organization called the Pandemonium Club. While being held by the Dark Sisters, Tessa learns that the reason she had been kidnapped was because she possessed supernatural powers and the head of the organization wanted to claim them for himself. With nowhere else to seek protection, Tessa accepts refuge with the Shadowhunters, and makes a deal with them; they will help her find her missing brother and her true origins if she allows them to use her powers to help them.
In my opinion, this was a great book! I think that this, being the first book of the series is the best because it sets up the setting for the readers. In this book, the author also uses different literary devices like characterization, description of different settings, and chronological plot organization to describe the different points of view from the different characters, and to provide the the reader with a most vivid perspective of the setting and theme of the book. I would recommend this book to teenagers because it’s very entertaining, and it allows the reader to have a quick escape from reality to an awesome fantasy world.
